Word Chain is a new way to play the old word game that will make you think and help you learn new words. Players are asked to put together a short "chain" of words that link two words that don't seem to go together at first. Fun and demanding tasks follow, with an added twist in the calculation of "relatedness," making things much more difficult.
In Word Chain, each challenge starts with two anchor phrases, such as "dog" and "lamp." Initially, they appear to have no resemblance. Your goal? Make a chain of intermediate words that connects the first and second, with each adjacent pair semantically related.
Q: How many words may I add?
The objective is to create the shortest valid chain possible, so feel free to add as many as you want. A better score is associated with a lower word count.
Q: How are two concepts "related"?
The game uses word embeddings, mathematical representations of meaning extracted from large text databases, to determine how linked two words are.
Q: Why didn't the two words I associated qualify as related?
This is because AI models emphasize specific meanings above others. A word's "sense" might change depending on how it is used, yielding unexpected effects.
